Maryland U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen is leading a new push to restore collective bargaining rights for federal workers as well as workplace protections, which the majority of federal employees lost due to executive orders by President Donald Trump. 

The Trump administration has cut over 157 open roles at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center and outpatient clinics across the Bay Area.

President Donald Trump’s administration on Friday afternoon announced that it has begun firing federal workers, OMB Director Russ Vought wrote on X. 

The government has been closed for a full month — and federal workers who have missed two paychecks are now using credit cards to pay their bills, visiting food pantries to stock their kitchens and reviewing their bank accounts, plotting exactly how long they can manage without a salary.

Two of the federal workers who filed an emergency complaint about the Department of Housing and Urban Development speak out about the Trump administration’s actions. 

A group of fired and furloughed workers – some from the USDA – gathered on the National Mall outside USDA headquarters on Thursday to help collect canned goods and other perishables for local families in need. 

Hosted by the Federal Unionists Network, Free DC and other activist organizations, the rally and food drive brought together food bank workers, faith leaders and furloughed federal workers who demanded that the Trump administration release $6 billion in emergency funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which helps 42 million people pay for groceries every month. 

The federal government shutdown has dragged into another week, and Republicans and Democrats appear no closer to ending it.
